At this point, we can officially label Salma Hayek Pinault a television mogul. The business-savvy leading lady has racked up quite a few TV producer credits. First she gave us Ugly Betty, and now she's retooling the Argentine novela Los Roldan for the American audience and working on a miniseries adaptation of Wicked.
Based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, Salma’s eight-hour ABC special will tell the real story about the broomstick-riding baddie from The Wizard of Oz. But Broadway fans beware: Although the popular Wicked musical is based on the same book, the miniseries won't have any campy song-and-dance routines, but will instead recreate the darker undertones of Maguire's original vision.
Salma's going directly to the source material for this adaptation to tell the story as it was originally written, perhaps because Universal Pictures already has the rights to turn the play into a feature film. According to TV Line, the series is being written by Band of Brothers writer Erik Jendresen and Salma may even have a supporting role. We're sure Hayek Pinault will lend the right touch to this project, and we can't wait to see who she casts to play Elphaba.
