Sci-fi sites were buzzing today with news that J.J. Abrams has "officially" confirmed Benicio Del Toro's participation in the new Star Trek movie. Though he didn't reveal details about Del Toro's role, he did express excitement about having the Wolf Man on board.

"Well, we're just in negotiations, we're in discussions. But I would love to work with [Benicio],” Abrams said at a recent red carpet appearance. "I've wanted to work with him for years, it felt like a good opportunity."

The most interesting rumors circulating say that Benicio will reprise Ricardo Montalban's role as the legendary Star Trek villain Khan. But nothing has been confirmed yet, which means Del Toro may possibly be cast as a member of the Starship Enterprise.

The Star Trek sequel is still in the final script stages and should start filming in early 2012. Hopefully by the time the new year kicks off, we'll have a much better idea on who (or what) Benicio will be playing.

La actriz is famous for her roles in Star Trek, Pirates of the Caribbean, Drumline, and Center Stage. When interviewed on the projects and roles she chooses, La Dominicana had this to say:

"I just love strong women that are in tune with their bodies—that don’t just use their bodies as sex tools. I’m very dominant—feisty. I’m not a man-hater, just a very proud woman."

Feisty? We LOVE that and we love her! She looks amazing! [iamflashy.com]

As we kicked back with our bowl of popcorn and watched the MTV Movie Awards over the weekend, we could not help but wonder - where on earth were all of the Latino celebrities?

Were they run over by evil paps? Lost their invitations in the mail? Or were they just too busy to attend? The preguntas have created a fountain of wonder. Fine. We will give credit where credit is due - Cameron Diaz was there to represent para la raza (right), but we can think of dozens of more celebs that could have strutted the red carpet. Even MTV's host Adrienne Bailon was missing in action! Where was she at?!

Here are our top three picks for Latino celebs that should have been at last night's MTV Movie Awards...

Example #1: Zoe Saldana. Not only is she the main female lead in the hit movie "Star Trek," but she also has potential to be voted in for next year's "Best Kiss" award. Getting it on in a space ship with Captain Kirk? Yeah she deserves a nomination!

Example #2: Michelle Rodriguez. The bad ass actress was killed off fairly quickly in the latest installment of "The Fast and the Furious," but let's give homegirl credit for her action scene with Vin Diesel in the beginning of the flick. Jumping from one moving vehicle to another is no easy task. She should get a free pass.

Example #3: Diego Luna & Gael Garcia Bernal. Starring as feuding hermanos in "Rudo y Cursi" may not have landed them a "Best Fight" nomination, but landing first place in Mexico should serve for some street credit no?

Do you think it's fair that Latinos were missing in action at the MTV Movie Awards? Tell us your thoughts!

Zoe Saldana isn't blind about the power of the "Star Trek" generation. The Queens-born actress knew about the captivating universe way before landing the lead role as Uhura. The franchise has dominated the sci-fiction macrocosm for nearly three decades, but the starship is about to get a special polishing thanks to director J.J. Abrams. There is no doubt that he is a sucker for Trek, but Zoe also admits that her own mother is a super-Trekky. MTV News caught up with the Dominicana to find out all about it right below...

Be sure to catch "Star Trek" in theaters this weekend.
