Want to see teens slashed up by a Ghostfaced killer? Or perhaps 90 minutes of campy dialogue and funny cameos from Hollywood’s hottest up-and-comers? Then we’re sure you’ll be delighted by the thrills and chills Scream 4 has to offer. On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for something fresh and new, you may want to look somewhere else.
Back in 1996, the original film gave the horror genre a hardcore kick in the butt with smart characters, tongue-and-cheek humor, and some genuine bloody gore. It’s easy to forget that all of the I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, and Scary Movie franchises started with Scream.
This newest installment reunites all of the principles from the original trilogy. Director Wes Craven is back and still doing a phenomenal job behind-the-scenes (at age 71 no less!), along with stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette. Judging from his recent Tr3s interview, it’s clear Arquette was thrilled to get the old gang back together.
But it’s the new cast members that audiences will wind up being most focused on. Featuring a who’s who of young tinseltown talent, the Scream 4 roster boasts Emma Roberts (Julia’s niece), Rory Culkin, Hayden Panettiere, and Aimee Teegarden. All of them do an able job of screaming, running, and dodging knife attacks, but there is a sense that they’re no different from roles that were created for the franchise a decade earlier.
One very welcomed returning cast member is Roger L. Jackson as the voice of Ghostface. His taunts and hilarious horror quiz phone calls create a lot of the film’s best moments and definitely stir up a nice bit of nostalgia for longtime fans of the saga.
As far as the rest of the plot goes, there are still plenty of mysterious moments as the team tries to figure out who’s behind the ghost mask. And Craven does a great job of casting doubt on literally every character. A trademark of the Scream movies have always been their twist endings and yes, this one has a pretty good one (sorry no spoilers). Just know that you’ll have to go through a lot of the same old same old to get there.
Bottom line: Though it does feel somewhat repetitive, Scream 4 offers a nice dose of laughs and jump-out-of-your seat moments. Plus with all of the family-friendly films currently in theaters, it could be a ghoulishly fun movie-going alternative.
Are you planning on seeing Scream 4 this weekend? Sound off in the comments or @MTV3.

I knew lots of things about David Arquette before interviewing him for his brand new movie Scream 4… I’d seen the previous films in the Scream franchise, I’d watched Cougartown (which he produced) and I’d marveled at how one of the funniest, coolest actors around could also muster the time and energy to become a Word Heavy Weight Champion.
But when the doors of suite 439 at the Lowes Hotel in South Beach opened, I met a David Arquette I did not expect!
Soft spoken, humble, and cracking up at the slightest joke, David Arquette struck me as a twenty-something trapped in a 40 year-old guy’s body…. I guess you ought to have that zest for life, that sparkling curiosity and that genuine interest about those around you, to be really honestly truly funny and creative!
Only a guy as creative as he can really be good at acting, producing, directing, wrestling and now even launching his own clothing line… No couch potato can achieve all that!
When discussing Scream 4, which comes out a whopping 11 years after the last installment of the franchise, David says it’s the most exciting thing:
"This is the reason why doing this film at this time was such a thrill… It’s exciting to know a new audience it’s going to be watching."
Although we interviewers were specifically asked not to bother David with any Courtney Cox related questions, I did ask David about first dates in general.
"I can tell you Scream 4 is the perfect movie for a first date"… And I couldn’t agree with him more.
A few days before my interview I began to follow David on Twitter to check out was he was up to on the days preceding our interview. So, after telling him I’d been snooping on the pictures he’d posted while in Orlando this past week, I jumped to the obvious question: How has twitter changed the dynamics of celebrity and what do you think about having the opportunity to have direct contact with your fans?
"I don’t like the attitudes of some people, staying at the margins and not establishing real contact with their fans… I think its awesome that everyone has an audience now".
“Well, now I’m following you on Twitter”, I told David. To which he said “Well, that only means one thing: I must start following you right now” At the time of publication David Arquette still doesn’t follow me on Twitter and at the end of my interview no amount of cracking up jokes got David Arquette to reveal who dies first in this long awaited last installment of 'Scream 4'.
