Horror movies received a major kick in the ass 30 years ago this fall. Back in October 1981, Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead gave the world flesh-eating zombies, flying chainsaws, and some of the craziest R-Rated terror ever unleashed on the screen! And now, Raimi's Ghost House Pictures has greenlit a remake, to be helmed by Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez.
"We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the Evil Dead series," Sam's reps said. "We can't wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us thirty years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film's original elements."
Getting attached to the Evil Dead is quite a score for the 33-year-old auteur. As of right now, he only has a series of Spanish shorts to his credit. But obviously something about his style impressed Raimi, who commissioned Alvarez and his partner Rodo Sayagues to work on the script.
Reports have come in that Sam has also added Juno scribe Diablo Cody to the writers' circle, which means you can expect plenty of Dead’s trademark humor intact. As for Raimi, he's moved on to quite a career since helming the cult classic. His Spider Man movies have grossed over two billion dollars and his next project is supposedly an update to The Wizard of Oz.
