Now in its 50th year, Sábado Gigante has become a staple of Saturday night television. But with rising production costs and a drop in the ratings, there is a serious possibility the iconic variety show could be facing cancellation.
Wonderwall Latino is reporting that Sábado may be on the fence for a 2012 renewal. In the TV world, right now is the time when execs decide which shows deserve another season. And several of the more expensive ones (like Fox's Terra Nova) got dropped without a second thought.
Sábado is known to be one of Univision's more expensive endeavors. In between the lavish stages and host Don Francisco's hefty paychecks, it can cost the network millions per year.
Univision recently axed Francisco's other show Don Francisco Presenta, which only added fuel to the fire. Plus at 71-years-old, perhaps it's time for Don to hand over the Gigante reigns to the Pequeños.
Would you be sad if Sabado Gigante got the axe? Sound off in the comments or @MTV3.

After 40 years on the small screen, Don Francisco is truly a living room legend. And next year he'll finally get his due, with an induction into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame!
The TV Hall of Fame is adding a pretty impressive group of names to its 2012 list. Outside of Francisco, they will be honoring Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre, former Disney head Michael Eisner, and Jeffersons star Sherman Hemsley.
Don's contribution to the world of television is nearly incalculable. He first launched his famous Sábado Gigante series back in 1962 and he's been a Spanish TV mainstay ever since. Francisco has hosted talk programs, game shows, and tons of charitable telethons.
Hall of Fame committee chairman Mark Itkin heaped praise on all of the inductees and seemed quite excited about the Class of 2012.
"The group of inductees for this year's Hall of Fame have had a remarkable impact in all areas of the television industry," he told the press. "From performers and hosts to producers and executives."
Who do you think deserves to be in the TV Hall of Fame? Sound off in the comments or @MTV3.

Nope, this isn't entertainment for your abuelita (you know we mean Don Francisco's, "Sábado Gigante")...

Pitbull is adding his own sophisticated swagger to el fin de semana during the Florida-based concert series, "Súper Sábados." The music festival is set to go off on April 11th, and will also include performances by Venezuelan salsero, Oscar D’León and Tito Nieves, among others. We recently spoke to the Los Premios Billboard-nominee about preparing his Boatlift follow-up album.
The Cubano states:
We definitely expect a "Krazy" comeback. Are you feelin' Pitbull's estilo? [MTV TR3s Radio Noticias]
