Are you tired of the Sotomayor jokes?

Are you wondering why a Latina can't be nominated for a high ranking position without media/politicians slandering her? Well, so is the National Council of La Raza.  To take a stand against haters they've started a petition "asking Republicans to restore the debate on Judge Sotomayor's Supreme Court nomination to a more appropriate level of civil discourse." AKA: start playing fair! The council is planning on presenting the petition to Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Friday, June 19.

What does that mean? It means if you are angered by the attacks on Sotomayor NOW is the time to use TU VOZ. Sign the petition here before Friday and condemn the attacks on Sotomayor. The countdown para la justicia starts now! [NCLR.org]

With Barack Obama finally settled in at the White House...

Latinos are not wasting any time pressing for the issues that we want resolved. We helped vote him in and now we want acción. So, when calling in favors, which topic is at the top of our agenda? Immigration, of course! The Hispanic Caucus got together recently with top activists and politicians including the National Coucil of la Raza and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund to address top national issues -- immigration was at the top of the list. The Hispanic Caucus has now sent a letter to Obama asking for him to make good on his promises regarding immigration reform.

As part of that reform, it seems the DREAM Act is making a bigger comeback than Britney Spears this year. Thanks to a huge youth initiative via Myspace and Facebook, Latinos got the DREAM Act voted one of the "Top 10 Ideas for Change in America" on change.org. This pushes the Dream Act into the official White House agenda for voting.

La lucha continues! For more ideas on getting involved in immigration reform visit www.dreamactivist.org. [change.org]

There is no doubt that Michelle Obama has the fashionista swagger that leaves everyone wondering what she will wear next.

We especially kept our eyes peeled on what she would rock on inauguration day! Our First Lady shined in a dazzling vintage-inspired yellow gown designed by Cuban-American designer, Isabel Toledo. Unlike most mainstream designers, Isabel is considered a newbie in the designer world. With only a couple of years in the fashion business she has already gained a reputation for recreating a modern avant garde look.

Redefining the meaning of traditional first lady attire, Mrs. Obama definitely picks her designers wisely and has worked with Isabel during Election season. Besides Toledo's designs, Michelle Obama has also picked evening wear designed by runway renegades, Narciso Rodriguez, Zero + Maria Cornejo, and Maria Pinto.

Latino troops count for approximately 17.7% of the armed forces. Once we shift our frame-of-thought from numbers to real time, the reality is that thousands of Latinos have been affected by the harsh reality of war. Whether you know someone who has been deployed or experienced the battle first hand, all of the voices share a common thread of struggle and survival. Many of our stories remain untold, but MTV News recently documented war veteran, Willie Vasquez's life on the battleground. We are sending a thankful shout-out to ALL Latino troops and veterans.

Obama supporters, Maná must be throwing their hands up in the air and celebrating a "Revolución de Amor"!

Despite the roqueros always keeping a private stance on politics, the "Tierra y Libertad" singers recently broke their silence by publicly supporting our Democratic President. The Mexican vocalist admits that his passion for change transcends border politics and takes flight on a global level.

Fher states:

Sounds like these chicos are the modern day Simón Bolívar. They deserve props for speaking-up for immigrants and a need for global change. Si o no? [MTV TR3s Radio Noticias]

Latinos represented their votes and helped make historia at the 2008 Presidential Election.

The evening resulted in a national wave of "SI SE PUEDE" chants, tears of victory, and yes, even explosive echoes of homemade fireworks. McCain may not have won enough electoral votes, but Latino supporters were just as watchful.

CNN reported that an estimated 67% of Latinos gave their votes to Barack Obama, while 30% gave their tickets to McCain. Why the major gap? According to the news network, 80% of Latinos disapproved of President Bush, and believed that McCain-Palin's administration would result in the same political ideals.

Senator McCain made sure to bow down gracefully by stating:

My friends, we have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly. A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him on being elected the next President of the country that we both love.

El Cangri must be heartbroken over this! Pobrecito.

But this isn't about celebrity endorsements because the majority rules! Presidente Obama sealed his glory with a memorable acceptance speech repeating "YES WE CAN":

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

Congratulations Obama! Are you still repeating "SI SE PUEDE" in your barrio? [MTV News, MTV News, CNN]
