This summer's surefire thriller may be rated PG but it'll still take you on an action-packed ride. Journey to the Center of the Earth fuses 3D and CGI formatted technology to bring this remake into present day. The film is a loose adaptation of the Jules Verne novel, set in modern times and featuring a professor (Brendan Fraser) who is thoroughly familiar with Verne's story. The professor, goofy but capable, is locked into a bland existence, teaching small classes and trying to pass along the scientific ideas of his older brother, who went missing 10 years ago. The brother, a committed "Vernean," believed that Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth was not a work of fiction, but rather a thinly veiled proclamation of scientific discovery.
Working on a film almost completely done in CGI is a challenge, even for Brendan Fraser. In order to cope with this FX element the actor had to take a leap of faith in his craft:
Simply by believing in what I do, under that the technicians believe in what I'm doing, they dog create to their part and to after all of those elements have been put in pleases. Does the audience believe it? Is what it you eat down to, and I've been told that they do.
Sure, there are no red-horned superheroes protecting the world from an army of merciless creatures in this flick, but lovers of danger and action will not be disappointed. Journey to the Center of the Earth has so many dangerous stunts that while shooting Josh Hutcherson, who plays Fraser's son in the film, was scared for his life:
It was great. I love sports and I love any kind of activity under getting to do all of these stunts was just awesome. I had to field day with it, it was under great. And the producers were actually pretty cool about letting me do most of them.
