Back in January, humanitarian Shakira announced her plans to build a school for Haiti through her Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation. Last Sunday (April 12), nearly 3 months after an earthquake devastated the island nation, Shaki visited Port-au-Prince to find a suitable site.

The singer waved to onlookers and greeted infants living on a Haitian golf course that has turned into a sprawling makeshift camp for 50,000 quake survivors.

“We came to do all the pre-production work needed to start a school here in Haiti. That’s what we’ve done in Colombia because of the armed conflict and emergency situations.

We came to meet with our partners and get to know the situation on the ground, see what the needs of the Haitian people are now... to understand the situation of the country now, today.”

Shakira's Barefoot Foundation continues to provide nutrition to more than 6,000 children in Colombia, and she is also a member of the ALAS foundation that advocates for children across Latin America.

Colombian Pop star Shakira was presented with the United Nation's Social Justice for Peace award at a ceremony in Switzerland Wednesday for her organization, the Barefoot Foundation, which provides nutrition and education for as many as 6,000 children in Colombia.

Shaki had this to say, after receiving the award:

"It's not too late to keep our promise to our children, but we must act now. Together, we can make education and decent work for all a reality. [Witnessing sub par conditions] shaped my dream and my vision of social justice: to see a world where every child can live a dignified life with the opportunity to reap the benefits of a good education and a chance to pursue their dreams."

Shakira is also a founding member of the ALAS Foundation which promotes public policies for children in Latin American and the Caribbean,  as well as being a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Felicidades a Shakira on her humanitarian efforts! She and Juanes definitely hold down their homeland!  (PerezHilton)
