In case you were wondering, today marks a lot more than the start of a new month. Around the globe, December 1 has officially become known as World AIDS Day. And this year, plenty of famous faces are speaking out to support the cause.

President Barack Obama made an impassioned speech at George Washington University this morning, telling reporters that the fight to end HIV and AIDS is far from over. He implored nations like China to contribute to the cause by donating funds to save the millions who are infected.

"Today, we come together, as a global community, across continents, faiths and cultures, to renew our commitment to ending the AIDS pandemic – once and for all," he said. "This fight isn’t over. Not for the 1.2 million Americans who are living with HIV right now. Not for the Americans who are infected every day."

In the Twitterverse, several celebrities helped spread the word too. Using the popular #WorldAIDSDay hashtag, stars like Martha Stewart and The Jonas Brothers encouraged their fans to donate.

"Want to fight for an AIDS Free Generation by 2015? Today’s the day: #WorldAIDSDay," Zach Galifianakis wrote.

Coldplay posted,

"Today’s #WorldAIDSDay. Fight for #endofAIDS."

On the Huffington Post, blogger Destiny Lopez specifically called out to the Hispanic community for support. In her article, she explained that Latinos account for one in five new HIV infections. She also published alarming stats, saying that 1 in 36 Hispanic men will contract HIV in their lifetime.

Alejandro Sanz and Paula Fernandez are doing their part to get the word out in Latin America. Their charity, “Positive Generation,” raises awareness about the disease and helps infected children in South Africa.

You can contribute too, by visiting the official World AIDS Day site and donating to help put an end to this deadly disease.

For the second year in a row, MTV's Europe Music Awards were all about Gaga. The Little Monster proved to be Belfast's star of the night, winning tons of awards and shocking the crowd with a provocative moon-shaped dress. Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, and Katy Perry got plenty of cheers too, as did the evening's hostess, Selena Gomez.

Proving herself to be a very capable MC, Selena kept the night rolling with timely jokes, solid presenting skills (including a moment where she was surrounded by flames), and a sexy white dress. Interestingly, Gomez walked the red carpet solo for the event, prompting many to speculate whether she and "The Biebs" had broken up.

Justin also hinted that he was a single man again, making no mention of Selena during his acceptance speeches for Best Pop Act and Best Male Act. He did, however, address the baby daddy rumors that have been plaguing him, saying to the crowd,

"There's been a lot of crap on the internet lately, but I've pulled through it. Thanks to MTV."

Lady Gaga made sure to throw in a few wisecracks too, particularly towards one of the night's big presenters, David Hasselhoff.

"I'm in the dressing room next to you and you have a very big p****," she told "The Hoff" from the stage.

But afterwards, Gaga seemed genuinely humbled by her awards, which included Best Female Act, Best Video, and Best Song for "Born This Way." She also performed one of her newest hits, "Marry The Night" wearing a circular red gown atop a giant moon crater.

Speaking about her "Born This Way" win, Lady G went on to say,

"I knew this was very special when I wrote it, and I didn't know when I first started out as a songwriter how special it would be. It’s the most important single to me."

Other big performers of the night included Bruno Mars (who won two awards), Coldplay, Snow Patrol, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. And though Katy Perry didn't belt out any songs, she did take home the EMA Best Live award.

"It's easy to buy a song, download a song, steal a song. But to buy a ticket and see an act live is real commitment," Katy told the cheering crowd after accepting her statue.

And proving that the EMAs still had some British pride, UK crooner Amy Winehouse received a touching musical tribute and the English band Queen took home the Global Icon prize.

If you were ever thinking of taking a trip to Rio de Janeiro, now may be the time to do it. Brazil's massive Rock In Rio festival is kicking off on Friday and it promises seven days of nonstop music madness. The planet's most popular artists are all ascending to South America to blow the roof off Olympic Village stadium. Expect performances from Rihanna, Guns N' Roses, Maná, and tons more!

Over 700,000 people have already bought tickets to the event, which will feature nearly 100 artists. Set to be held at Brazil's "City of Rock," the venue is actually a brand new construction that will later be used for the 2016 Olympic Games. And if you ask organizer Roberta Medina, the more room they can provide for the fans, the better!

"Rock in Rio is to Brazil what Woodstock was to the world!" she enthusiastically said.

The first Rock in Rio took place back in 1985 and attracted an audience of 1.4 million. Classic artists like Queen, AC/DC, and Rod Stewart highlighted the festival back then. But now, fans are getting a much wider blend of music.

The organizers did a very admirable job of mixing both current and classic rockers when setting the roster. Fans of old school music will get to experience artists like Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Modern day metal heads can get their “headbang” on to songs from Metallica and Slipknot. And for all of you who prefer a little Latin twist to your guitar solos, Shakira and Maná will not disappoint.

Katy Perry will actually be the headliner kicking off the festivities on Friday night. And don't let her "California Gurl" demeanor fool you, Katy has had huge chart success throughout Latin America and may even break out some Spanish lyrics during her prime time set. The Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra will also be on hand opening night, giving the first evening quite a bit of range.

Throughout the week, audiences will see performances from Coldplay, Rihanna, Ke$ha, and plenty more. And to close it all up on October 10, Rock in Rio is bringing back an old fave. Guns N' Roses (who first appeared at the festival back in 1991) will be belting out classic '80s hits alongside the newly reunited System of a Down!

For everyone who can't make it, don't worry. The organizers are so confident about the success of this year's event that they've already confirmed Rock in Rio lineups for the next four years!

It’s hard to believe that the Lollapalooza festival is now 20 years old. Back in 1991, Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell conceived of the idea as a way to take star studded "super concerts” on the road. And now, it has become a staple of showcasing established and up-and-coming musical talent. This past weekend’s lineup was no exception and proved that the 'Palooza is still going strong!

Kicking off Friday at Chicago’s Grant Park, the show got off to a great start with a spirited performance from Coldplay (making their Lollapalooza debut). Doling out classics like "Yellow" and "In My Place," Chris Martin and company delivered the goods. They even kicked off their set with a cover of Jay-Z’s "99 Problems."

"It took us 20 years to get to Lollapalooza and we've always wanted to do it," Martin enthusiastically told the crowd. "Thank you for making four young — well, not that young anymore — but four men's dreams come true. We're going to give everything we have this evening."

Other Friday highlights included a high-concept performance from Muse and the debut of Pete Wentz’ Fall Out Boy followup, Black Cards. And the warm summer night definitely brought out the fans. Over 90,000 people attended the kickoff!

Day two turned out to be just as exciting. Sporting what looked like a football uniform gone wrong, Cee-Lo commanded major attention on the mic when he blared out hits like "F**k You" and "Crazy." Another big Saturday crowd pleaser was headliner Eminem, who played with a live backing band and spewed rhymes for over 90 minutes.

Sunday continued the positive streak with quite a diverse array of bands. House fans got crowd-bumping beats courtesy of DJ Deadmau5, 80’s music lovers enjoyed retro tunes from the reunited Cars, and the Foo Fighters closed things up with a super high-energy set.

When it was all over, founder Perry Farrell took the mic and thanked the fans for their continued support.

"I will tell you, looking back at the whole weekend, this is one of the great moments of my life," Farrell said. "No matter what happens from here, I had a great moment in the sun."

And don’t think we forgot about the Latino presence at this year’s festival. Lollapalooza kicked off its first concert in Chile earlier this year and one of the country’s hottest bands came north to return the favor. Chico Trujillo’s mix of horns and percussion delivered a very memorable experience that overwhelmed the crowd.

It’s also interesting to note that Lollapalooza will be heading to Brazil in 2012. So we can only imagine the increased impact it will have on the Latino culture by the time year 40 rolls around!

It looks like Ryan Seacrest is one step closer to world domination. The Radio DJ/American Idol host/E! News guy/Keeping Up With The Kardashians producer is now putting together a massive iHeartRadio concert featuring the music world's biggest stars.

Just listen to the lineup that Ryan has secured thus far. Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Sting, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Nicki Minaj, and John Mayer are just a few of the notables looking to grace the stage. And don't think that there won't be a strong Latino presence there. Reports are also coming in about Bruno Mars joining the festivities.

"This is a once in a generation gathering of artists and fans from all over the country for a true, must-see music event," Seacrest said when discussing the concert. "The iHeartRadio Music Festival will showcase top artists across all genres of music. Listeners from all over America will travel to Las Vegas to celebrate the next generation of iHeartRadio, while seeing the greatest musicians in the world on one stage."

Co-produced by Clear Channel, the iHeartRadio concert is actually an extension of the iHeartRadio radio network, which delivers over 750 music stations. The concert would be a hodgepodge of everything iHeart offers, featuring top acts from a variety of genres.

Set to go down at Las Vegas' MGM Grand in September, you can bet that concert tickets won't be cheap. Seacrest will MC the affair, which will span an entire weekend. Not coincidentally, there will be several American Idol tie-ins as well. Not only will J.Lo be on board, but so will her fellow judge, Steven Tyler.

Tix are going on sale this Saturday and even if you can't make it, there will still be plenty of opportunities to hear the performances. The entire concert will be streamed live on the iHeartRadio website and broadcast on all Clear Channel-owned radio stations.

The strongest aftershock to date hit Haiti early this morning (January 20), rattling nerves and sparking fears of renewed damage and casualties one week after the island was devastated by a 7.0 temblor. According to CNN, the 6.1-magnitude aftershock, which struck just after 6 a.m. ET.  It was the latest in a series of dozens of aftershocks that have hit since the January 12 quake that destroyed much of the capital and took at least 72,000 lives.

In addition to causing panic and distress among the more than 3 million survivors who have been battling to stay alive in dire conditions amid the rubble of the original earthquake, such a strong aftershock can pose serious danger in an area where damaged buildings are already teetering precariously, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

CNN described a scene in which patients at a hospital near the airport in Port-au-Prince began immediately praying for forgiveness and protection as the ground rocked back and forth.

At least one injury was reported in the moments following the aftershock, which came as desperately needed medical reinforcements approached offshore in the form the USNS Comfort, a state-of-the-art hospital aboard a U.S. naval ship. U.S. helicopters will fly patients to the Comfort for treatment to relieve some of the pressure on overburdened hospitals and clinics. The ship carries nearly 550 doctors, nurse, technicians and support staff, who will be joined by 350 other medical personnel once the ship reaches Haiti.

As of Wednesday, 3 million Haitians were still in need of food, water, shelter and medical assistance, according to a United Nations estimate. More than $220 million has been contributed to major U.S. relief groups to date.

Shakira, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Wyclef Jean, Bono, and Jay-Z will lead the all-star lineup of performers for Friday night's "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief" telethon, sponsored by MTV Networks. More than 100 stars have signed on to help raise funds for the show, which will air commercial-free across ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, BET, the CW, HBO, MTV, VH1, CMT and dozens of other networks on Friday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The Grammy Awards used to offer a dry lineup of performers, but not this year...

New performances were announced today, including T.I. and Justin Timberlake. The hip-hop palette is also going to be mixed with a watch-worthy trio performance of "Swagga Like Us" featuring, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West (a.k.a. Martin Louis the King Jr.). Los roqueros are also dominating the mic with modern power players like Radiohead (who are up for five Grammy's) rocking the stage on February 8th.

La loca Katy Perry, 'Viva la Vida' Coldplay, country songstress Carrie Underwood, and Los Jonas Brothers are only a few of the other pop stars hitting the stage. Now we are just wondering dónde están los Latinos????? Hopefully, Wisin y Yandel get added in the upcoming announcements. What other Latino artists do you think should hit the stage? [MTV News]
