In our latest installment of Deep Thoughts, Blogamole contributor Michael Lopez reminds you that taking care of yourself, your family, and your planet doesn't automatically make you a hippie.

Smell that beautiful fresh air. Wait a minute, just how fresh is it? Well, if you’re like most of us living in major metropolitan areas, it may be time to break out the gas masks. In traffic-heavy New York, Latinos account for the highest adult asthma rate of any ethnic group. And in California's farmworker communities, pesticide exposure is a regular occurrence, leading to increased lymphoma and cancer risks.
Yes, environmental health threats are a major issue within the American Latino community, which many of us aren’t even aware of. The National Resources Defense Council produced an entire report on these concerns, which range from poor drinking water to lead poisoning threats to contaminated foods.

In the Los Angeles neighborhood of Baldwin Hills, activist Irma Munoz decided to form her own Latin-themed green organization, Mujeres de la Tierra after seeing lifelong friends succumb to cancers from environmental hazards.
Her work to bring Latino eco-education to the forefront even got the attention of Newsweek, which published a major story on her cause.
“Latinos in many urban areas are the new mainstream, but unfortunately that does not translate in the equitable distribution of resources-especially in the ‘green world’.” She told them. “A lot of power plants and factories are traditionally put in minority neighborhood, and we suffer as a result of that. What we want are all the things that are necessary to good community health in any urban area: trees and clean air quality.”
California did seem to listen, as evidenced by new laws that now put a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, particularly those from industrial plants. Former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez spoke up about the residents who don’t often get a big enough voice in environmental activism.
“For a long time, the image of an environmentalist…was a stereotypical brie-eating, chardonnay-sipping,…elite.” Nunez was quoted as saying. “But there were other issues that affected people wouldn’t commonly be known as environmentalists.”
So what else can be done to ensure Latino communities protect themselves from ecological dangers?
The NRDC’s report addressed many vital points including making data more available, accessible Spanish-language information on protecting against health risks, and the need for stricter laws against harmful emissions and contaminants.
Obviously none of this can be done overnight, but acknowledgment is a step in the right direction. It never hurts to stay active with your local government and voice your opinions on eco-hazards you think need to be corrected. Follow the NLCCC on Facebook and find out about events in your area.
And if all else fails, find a nice little garden and plant a tree.

"Now, stepping up to the plate at Baltimore’s Oriole Park, First Lady Michelle Obama!" Not the first name you’d expect to hear a baseball announcer say at a MLB stadium, but that’s exactly what the crowd heard!
Last week, Michelle Obama made a public appearance to spread awareness for the “Let’s Move” campaign, geared towards fighting childhood obesity. In fact, her participation marked the start of major partnership with Major League Baseball that will include top Latino sluggers as spokesmen!
Carlos Gonzalez from the Colorado Rockies, the Anaheim Angels’ Joel Pineiro, Matt Garza from the Tampa Bay Rays and more will be featured in PSAs spreading the word about healthier eating and outdoor exercise.
When speaking to participants in the stands, Michelle said, "We've got to get you guys focused and moving. When these players were kids they found a sport that they loved. They practiced and practiced and practiced until they were better at it than anybody else. We want you guys to do the same thing."
“Let’s Move” is a relatively new program (it was launched back in February in cooperation with the USDA) and inspires kids to engage in physical activities and enjoy a healthier diet of nutritious foods. And seeing how beautiful the summer weather is, we couldn’t think of a better message to spread to right now. So put down that Xbox, go outside, and have some fun!

We always love hearing about young Latino stars taking the time to give back. Think about it… You’re in the prime of your life, making millions of dollars, and working constantly on film and TV projects. Do you really think there would be time time to lead workshops across the country and counsel young people on the importance of education? Wilmer Valderrama is proof that it's possible!
The actor and activist has quietly donated dozens of hours to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) and was recently honored for his work with their Ready To Lead (R2L) program.

As the nation’s premier Hispanic non-profit leadership development organization, CHCI works to groom the next generation of influential Latinos by promoting higher education and improved graduation rates. Wilmer has made a major impact, via his numerous R2L sessions and PSAs.
As he puts it, "This has been some of the most rewarding work I have ever done. It is crucial that we embrace the youth of today for the future of America. When I tell them they can, that's all they need."
With all of his success and a high-profile image, it’s no surprise that CHCI announced that they’re extending Wilmer’s partnership through 2012. Keep up the good work amigo, because we all know a little inspiration can go a long way!
For more info about CHCI, check out http://www.chci.org/.

Although Don Omar didn't win his round of La Super Copa Tr3s, Team Blogamole has to give him major props. Not only does he know how to fire up a party with his "iDon" ways, but as the spokesperson for the 2010 Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards, the reggaetonero also encourages Latino youth to receive a college education — with free money!
The King of Kings is speaking out to all Latino high school juniors, encouraging them to apply to leadership grants funded by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. Three lucky students will be selected in each of the following academic categories, including Math & Engineering, Education, Business, Science, Community Service, and others that will soon be announced.
The hitmaker spoke out about his involvement in this program:
"I am calling on Latino youth to step up and be role models and leaders to help move the Latino community forward. The Hispanic Heritage Foundation is focused on not simply recognizing young leaders but putting them in a position from which to lead and positively affect others in the future.
Education, community service and entering the workforce in a strong position are essential for the future of America, not just the Latino community. We’re counting on our youth and I believe we’re in good hands."
Want to be a part of this amazing opportunity? You still have until July 1 to apply! The applications for the 2010 Youth Awards are now available at www.hispanicheritage.org. Buena suerte!!!

The latest celebs to join the NOH8 Campaign are hip hop mogul and philanthropist Russell Simmons and Christina Milian. Earlier this week (June 15), Simmons hosted a NOH8 shoot with ex Kimora Lee Simmons, nieces Angela and Vanessa, Vivica Fox and ANTM star Jaslene Gonzalez.
Christina Milian brought along her baby, Violet — you're never too young to learn activism, right? Photos from Tuesday's shoot aren't on the site yet, but Uncle Russell shared this cute Twitpic:

The NOH8 Campaign is a photographic silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley, in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8 (bans same-sex marriage in California). Over 2000 faces have been photographed, including those of celebrities and people from all walks of life.
Funds raised by NOH8 will be used to continue raising awareness for marriage equality and anti-discrimination.
Upcoming NOH8 events include an open shoot on Saturday (June 26), 2 PM - 5 PM at the W Hotel in San Francisco.

"Celebrating History, Heritage and the American Dream" is the festive theme of this year's Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's (CHCI) Awards, which recently announced Eva Longoria, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and jazz legend Arturo Sandoval as their 2010 highest honored recipients.
The celebrity philanthropists are set to receive the 2010 Medallion of Excellence for Leadership and Community Service during the 33rd Annual Awards Gala being held on September 15 in Washington, D.C.
The actress who plays Gabrielle Solis on the hit ABC series "Desperate Housewives" may be known for her greedy and egotistical ways on-screen, but en la vida real Longoria is a highly respected activist. In 2006, Eva founded Eva's Heroes, an organization committed to helping disabled children find the support they need to live a quality-driven life. As the national spokesperson for Padres Contra el Cancer, Eva also promotes the nonprofit organization dedicated to aiding Latino children and families affected by cancer.
The Chicana isn't just keeping her passion for change behind-the-scenes. She is currently producing her first documentary film titled "Harvest," which reveals the truth behind child farm workers in the U.S.

Juanes is always working on making the world a better place. The "Me Enamora" singer was recently honored with the 2010 "Al-Rashid Hope Award" for his humanitarian efforts at the 8th annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels & Stars Gala in Miami, Florida.
Over 550 guests attended the star-studded event that included performances by Luis Enrique, and the former member of Sin Bandera, Noel Schajris. Besides helping victims of cancer, the Latin Grammy winner pioneered the successful Mi Sangre Foundation, which helps victims of mines.
Here is what Juanes had to say about his award:
"As a father, I can't help but be profoundly touched by the children who are currently being treated at St. Jude. At this great hospital our children have hope, and that is why I joined this cause, and with sincere gratitude accept this award."
Congrats Juanes! We admire your revolutionary spirit!

Whoever believed Jennifer Lopez when she said her "Love Don't Cost A Thing"? J.Lo's spirit of giving hit new heights this week: The "Back-Up Plan" actress recently donated precious gemstones and diamonds to help raise serious cash for the Cannes Film Festival AIDS auction.

Proceeds from the event totaled $6.7 million, which will go to the American Foundation for Aids Research. Word has it that J.Lo donated ten luxury items, including a a gold-plated bottle of bubbly and a monkey-shaped pendant. We wonder if that was left over stock from the Bennifer days...
Paris Hilton, Mary J. Blige, and Michelle Williams were among the celebs that auctioned off their goods for charity, but one of the highest-rolling bids was to spend a day with former President Bill Clinton. Final price? $200,000!
No wonder the event earned about $2 million more than in 2008. And they say we are in a recession!

Ricky Martin is such a handsome humanitarian!

He recently showed support for the concerns of Universidad de Puerto Rico students, through Twitter:
"Puerto Rico: inaceptable se impida el alimento a los estudiantes y se violen sus derechos. Justicia para los estudiantes"
Upon hearing that extra-curricular activities were to be shut down, the students at UPR rallied and protested. They have been on strike since April 23, in opposition to severe budget cuts. Unfortunately, one of the student's parents were injured during a recent protest.
Ricky Martin turned to Twitter to share his thoughts after learning about the accident — so thoughtful!
Martin is known for his activism and charity work. He and other artists recently launched a PSA to promote the Ricky Martin Foundation and their efforts to help victims of recent quakes in Chile and Haiti.
For more information on the UPR strike, visit http://rojogallito.blogspot.com/.

Look up 'waka waka' in the urban dictionary and you'll find the following definitions: "The line Fozzie the bear says after a very cheezy joke" and "The act of masturbation, striking of the male genitals" (Can anyone say TMI on that last one?). The definitions may cross the line between sweet and perverse, but hopefully Shakira's "Waka, Waka" single adds a literary balance to the mix.

The "Hips Don't Lie" singer's new single is inspired by an African-style dance, which she wants fans to dance to in support of the campaign 1Goal for universal education. The mission is simple: practice your dance moves, record your best "Waka, Waka" performance, and post your video at Youtube.com/shakirawakawaka.
We've got more on Shaki's contest and tour date updates, after the jump! Read more...
