We can only imagine what it would be like to become an "instant star." But that seems to be exactly what Fernanda Andrade is experiencing at the moment. Her new movie, The Devil Inside, has already scored over $34 million at the box office and is well on its way to becoming a runaway smash. Still taking it all in, Fernanda took some time to talk about the movie (and its fervent following) with us this week.
"This is really incredible," she explained. "I don't think anybody expected the movie to hit this big. It's nuts!"
Andrade definitely has a point. Made for a modest $1 million budget, Devil was shot over three years ago and had originally been intended as a straight-to-DVD release. But with the success of similar films like Paranormal Activity, Paramount Studios took notice and distributed it into theaters nationwide.
"We never in our wildest dreams could have imagined this movie would have done as well as it did," Fernanda went on to say. "We shot it three years ago and it was intended to be a small low budget film. But I have to admit, there was definitely an element of it being something very special."
Though she plays a girl of Italian origin in the movie, Andrade's family is actually from Brazil and she was raised there until she was 11-years-old. Clearly proud of her Latin roots, Fernanda told us that she originally had been trained as a dancer and discovered acting on a whim.
Clearly her star will be rising now, but not necessarily in a Devil sequel (as of yet).
"Whether there will be a second movie is anybody's guess," she explained. "But there was always the intention of having people look deeper into the film after that final sequence. The movie's website is a definitely a forum for that."
If you ask us, Devil Inside 2 is a sure thing. It's proven itself to be a profitable franchise and there are still plenty of more demonic possessions to explore. Though it will be hard to top that infamous Rosa exorcism scene halfway through the film.
"The 'Rosa scene' was definitely one of the creepiest to film," Andrade told us. "We shot it in a little room in the basement of this abandoned mansion. There were some very strange vibes going on."
If you haven't seen it yet (and are yearning for a good scare), you can still catch The Devil Inside at a theater near you.
