With such a flurry of upcoming events, is it possible that Brazil may be overextending itself? They're on board to host the 2016 Olympics, they've got the Rock in Rio festival going on, and they were supposed to be the home of the 2014 World Cup. But according to the latest reports, FIFA may be moving its next epic fútbol battle to the U.S.
FIFA seems most troubled with sluggish construction at Brazil World Cup venues and infrastructure issues at the country's airports. Other possible red flags include poor sanitation services and a lack of good public hospitals for injured fútbol fans.
So far there are no definite details about where in the U.S. FIFA is considering moving the Cup, or even if it will happen at all. And if Brazil does get the green light, they better be prepared for some massive expenses. Some independent forecasters have predicted that the 2014 World Cup could cost as much as $60 billion.
Key Latin American economist Gustavo Grisa believes that Brazil will be able to pull it off, though it won't be easy.
"It is very ambitious to host the World Cup and the Olympic Games in such a short period of time," he said. "It won't be a crisis, but it can add to other problems during a time when the public deficit and the country's social security are in a crucial moment."
