To be honest, we kind of have mixed feelings about this year's Emmy Awards. On one hand, one of our favorite shows, Modern Family, took home five statues. But on the other, not one of them went to Sofía Vergara for Best Supporting Actress!
Sadly, our other top contender, Edgar Ramirez, lost out on his Best Actor nomination too. But there were still plenty of memorable moments and some stunning styles from our favorite Latinas.
As far as surprises go, Charlie Sheen's appearance probably takes the cake. Seeming humbled and much more "sane," the former Two and a Half Men star took the stage to announce the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy category. While addressing the crowd, he offered his support to the Men crew and even to his replacement, Ashton Kutcher.
"From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season," he said. "I know you will continue to make great television."
Another memorable moment came from host Jane Lynch's spirited monologue. After kicking off a star-studded pre-taped piece (featuring Leonard Nimoy and Randy Jackson), the comedienne launched into a hilarious musical number alongside the "Emmytones" and Wilmer Valderrama.
Then came the handouts, which went to some very high-profile names. Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy took home a statue for her work on the show Mike & Molly, Julianna Marguiles earned an Outstanding Dramatic Actress honor for The Good Wife, and Sofia’s castmates Ty Burell and Julie Bowen both earned Modern Family Emmy love.
In fact, Modern Family got the highest comedy honor of the night. It received Best Series for the second year in a row and producer Steve Levitan seemed quite humbled by its ongoing success.
"It's a little surreal," he said from the stage. "We're gonna have fun tonight. I just hope we have a good ending, and we're really just so grateful to everybody who's been saying the nicest things about our show."
The night was dominated by Modern Family, Mad Men and Friday Night Lights. HBO's Game of Thrones only won two Emmys out of 13 nominations: Outstanding Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage and Maint Title Design.
And though Vergara didn't win for her acting chops, she definitely scored kudos from the Emmy night style blogs. Strutting down the red carpet in gold bracelets and a glamorous red dress, she caught the eye of nearly all of the paparazzos. Other Tr3s faves making fashion waves included Aubrey Plaza in a sleek white gown and Rico Rodriguez, who sported thick-framed glasses and a bright blue shirt.
And though most of our favorite Latinos did get the Emmy snub this year, we're hopeful that the Golden Globes' TV categories will be a lot more generous.
