It looks like Netflix is one step closer to taking over the world. This week, the movie rental company announced that it will be expanding its reach into Latin America, opening up its customer base to another potential 215 million users!
Having already crushed popular rental chains like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, Netflix has proven itself to be quite the media powerhouse. Since its launch in 1997, the company has cornered the market in online video streaming and home DVD deliveries.
With its Latin America expansion, Netflix is expected to take things even further. The company has stated that it will begin renting out movies in Spanish, English, and Portuguese to countries throughout Central and South America. And don't be surprised if several popular novelas get on the streaming list too.
Interestingly, many in the Latin American cable world are a little wary of the move. The fear is that with cheaper options like Netflix, many subscribers will ditch their HBO packages and settle for TV seasons on DVD. And judging by the huge jump in Netflix stock since the announcement, it's not that far-fetched of a thought.
