This week's big release, Bridesmaids, is actually somewhat hard to classify. Is it a fun chick flick about the experience of getting married? Or a bawdy over-the-top comedy in the vein of Saturday Night Live? Truth be told, it's actually a little of both.
Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. Bridesmaids definitely has elements both guys and girls will enjoy. But the question is, does it have enough of them? It's hard to picture friends on a girls' night out enjoying vomiting scenes and bathroom humor. But, on the other hand, guys may get a bit restless throughout the drawn-out romantic subplot. Thankfully, there are plenty of universal laughs in between that will appeal to both genders.
Kristen Wiig (who co-wrote the film) stars as Annie, a down-on-her-luck pastry chef who just can't seem to find Mr. Right. When she discovers that she's been chosen to be the maid-of-honor in her BFF Lillian's wedding, it almost spirals her into a deeper depression about her lonely life.
But, like any good "bestie," Annie sucks it up and begins the process of organizing Lillian's unconventional bridal party. And that's when the real fun begins.
The Bridesmaids team did a great job of casting this outrageous court. The Offices’'Ellie Kemper delivers major LOLs as Becca, "the sweet and inncocent one," Wendi McLendon-Covey adds a nice touch as the burnt out mom of the bunch, and Melissa McCarthy is a true scene stealer, playing out-of-control bridesmaid Megan.
But of course, what fun is a movie without a snarky villain? Enter Rose Byrne. The sexy Australian actress delivers a knockout performance as Helen, the rich socialite looking to steal Annie's thunder. Not only that, she's a great comedic sparring partner for Wiig, delivering some of the funniest moments in the movie.
And as with any rom com, there is also a cookie-cutter love story, tearful female bonding scenes, and an over-the-top finale that ties everything together. Wiig definitely deserves a lot of credit for keeping the pace moving. She's obviously a very brave comedienne and isn't afraid to lay herself on the line, no matter how raunchy the joke!
Bottom Line: Fans of Kristen's no-holds-barred comedy style on Saturday Night Live will enjoy this movie (she's even managed to stick in a few of her famous bits). But if you're looking for a sweet "date night" comedy, be warned. There's a reason that Bridesmaids poster says Rated R!
