Appearing in front of hundreds of fans (and a giant set of boots), Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek Pinault made a major impact on the Cannes Film Festival this week. The two stars arrived to promote their new animated feature Puss In Boots and also took a moment to discuss the impact of Latinos in Hollywood.
"When I started out, Hispanic roles were very limited." Salma explained. "There were one or two kinds of characters you used to do. Now we get to play the cats! It's OK to be a Hispanic, even if you are a cat."
Banderas and Hayek Pinault aren’t just playing any run-of-the-mill felines. Antonio’s returning as Shrek's swashbuckling pal Puss and Salma will be voicing the very sexy Kitty Softpaws. Though Boots won’t hit theaters for another several months, the animated prequel's already attracting a ton of viral buzz.
Salma had high praise for the film and singled out the massive fanbase that Puss has attracted.
"What’s interesting and great about [Puss In Boots] is it’s not contrived," Hayek Pinault told Entertainment Weekly. "It’s not like, 'Oh, there's a good Spanish market. Let’s now target them because we have not yet done the Mexican princess. [Antonio’s character] got a life of its own, and that’s what created this, organically."
The comedic Puss In Boots trailers have already become a web sensation and we're sure die-hard Shrekkers will be lining up when it arrives in theaters on November 4.
