Those following Ninel Conde's tweets got quite a shock this week. In response to the big political news that broke on Sunday, the Mexican starlet wrote,
"Lamento la muerte del presidente Barack Osama, todas mis condolencias a Estados Unidos"
Obviously she got her words jumbled up. But for the average reader, a statement like that would be absolutely devastating. Ninel was quick to clarify the matter, saying that she was referring to the death of Osama bin Laden and not the current commander-in-chief.
But Conde’s post does stir up an interesting debate about celebrities and inaccurate tweeting. Often famous people quickly type their posts through their mobile devices, without really thinking the entire statement through. Whether it’s a misspelled word, a mistaken news story, or a 2 a.m. drunken post, there are always repercussions.
We all remember the flack former beauty queen Alicia Machado got for mistaking China for North Korea. The backlash from her abrupt tweet was so harsh, Alicia wound up cancelling her account (which has since been reopened).
Even more recently, a Glee extra lost her job for being too candid about details surrounding the season finale. Nicole Crowther's prom king and queen revelations sent shockwaves through the set and prompted a stern public lashing from producer Brad Falchuk. Not to mention threats and profanity posts from the hardcore Gleeks!
Rocker Courtney Love actually got sued for $40,000 because of a slur she tweeted about a boutique owner. And don’t get us started on the tasteless Twitter jokes. 50 Cent’s insensitive posts about the suicide of Tyler Clementi lost him thousands of followers and comedian Gilbert Gottfried got fired from AFLAC after making derogatory remarks about Japan.
Do we wish there were a few tweet police out there to prevent these types of chisme comments? Sure. But the truth is, the twitterverse is just too massive to get a firm grasp on. In the meantime, our advice is to take each dumb celebrity post with a grain of salt and appreciate it for what it is…140 characters of pure entertainment.
