It’s pretty hard to keep a song secret in this day and age. With cracked emails, mp3 thieves, and pocket audio recorders, studio spies have the capabilities to send out forthcoming singles way before they’re ever “officially” finished. This Monday, Beyonce became the latest victim of track hacking as snippets of her “Girls (Who Run The World)” leaked online.
The good news is that “Girls” sounds like a phenomenal track. Featuring a sample of Major Lazer's "Pon de Floor,” it’s not surprising to hear that Bey wants to use it as the leadoff single for her upcoming fourth album. Just reading the lyrics is enough to get excited.
"Boy you know you love it/ How we're smart enough to make these millions/ Strong enough to bare the children/ Then get back to business/ See, you better not play me/ Don't come here, baby/ Hope you still like me/ If you hate me."
It’s definitely an interesting choice of words and you’ve got to wonder if that “making millions” line has anything to do with her steady Jay-Z. But beyond the choruses, “Girls” possesses some great heavy beats and a nice balance of keyboard flourishes to keep things interesting.
Beyonce has teased that her new album will include all kinds of varying musical genres.
“I'm mixing every type of genre that I love and I'm inspired by every type of genre. ... I'm not in a box,” she recently said. “It's not R&B. It's not typically pop. It's not rock. It's just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music."
Whatever it is, by the sound of “Girls,” Bey’s new album will definitely stir up a lot of interest. Look for it in stores later this year.
