It looks like Jennifer Aniston’s perfume line may have some stiff competition headed its way. Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta is releasing his first fragrance in over 10 years and using a very different medium to debut it. According to Time, the Dominican designer is launching Esprit d’Oscar via Facebook.
As of right now, Facebook users have the option of receiving free samples of the scent by “Liking” Oscar’s official Fan Page. The actual bottle isn’t set to hit fragrance counters for another two weeks, so as of right now, the social network is the only way to try it.
Only 5,000 samples of Esprit will be made available, so there is a good chance the promotion will finish up quick (especially when you consider that Oscar already has over 120,000 Fans). Touting itself as “the spirit of femininity,” the cute flower-shaped bottle is actually being marketed as an affordable perfume line, which is a major contrast to the pricey fashion designs De la Renta fans are used to.
And though Oscar may think of himself as a Facebook fragrance trailblazer, in actuality stunts like these have been utilized before. Marc Jacobs launched a scent last year tied into the social network game Bang! You’re It! And, not surprisingly, it was a major hit.
