Any series with the name Good Christian Bitches is bound to stir up controversy. Described as “Desperate Housewives in Dallas,” the 2011 fall pilot has already picked up a stellar cast, including Iron Man’s Leslie Bibb and Tr3s fave Marisol Nichols. But it has also picked up its share of critics, particularly The Parents Television Council.
“[Good Christian Bitches] blatantly attacks the world’s largest faith,” said PTC president Tim Winter. “"The ‘b-word’ is toxic and is used to degrade, abuse, harass, bully and humiliate women. And the ‘Christian’ element only adds insult to injury. Would ABC even consider another faith to denigrate? Would they even consider a program title or a plot line based on ‘Bitches’ who were Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist? I suspect not, and I certainly hope not. So why the double standard?"
Based on a book by author Kim Gatlin, Bitches may not be the show’s final title. In fact, its plot doesn’t even center on Christianity or religion. According to Deadline.com, GCB focuses on the life of a former “mean girl” (played by Bibb) who moves back to her hometown hoping to make amends with those she tormented.
Nichols is set to play Bibb’s BFF and the only one willing to welcome the former bully back. Produced by Darren Star of Sex and the City fame, GCB is backed by A-list talent. The only question is whether it will make it to air. As of right now, Bitches is still a pilot, which means ABC can drop it from the fall schedule if the controversy gets too heated.
