Golden Boy Promotions founder and 10-time world boxing champion Oscar de la Hoya is taking his talents to the Middle East.
With the purpose of boosting troop morale, de la Hoya, in a collaboration with the United Service Organization (USO), will visit troops in the Middle East to teach them necessary fighting skills.
“Its a mission to boost troop morale," a USO spokesman told pr-inside.com. "The group will participate in boxing clinics, share techniques and extend their thanks to America's troops serving in the Middle East.”
For security reasons, the locations and tour dates of de la Hoya's visits will remain undisclosed. Despite the danger involved, the "Golden Boy” expressed his excitement on Twitter:
“Just announced today I'm headed over to the middle east with a few golden boy fighters to be with the troops. I'll be down in the middle east for about a week training with them, signing autographs, I can't wait maybe even spar with some.”
“Because of security reasons I can't say where I'm going, we just have to say the middle east but.....I'll be sending picks and messages from the troops. I'm excited I finally can say I'm doing something for our nation's protectors.”
The Golden Boy fighters he's referring to are undefeated Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell (20-0-1), Adrien “The Problem” Broner (19-0-0) and Danny “The Golden Child” Jacobs (21-1-0).
The USO, established in 1941, is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with the Department of Defense to provide support and entertainment to U.S. troops. Six-time world champion boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard held a similar clinic in 2003.
