These days, it seems impossible to keep up with the antics of actor Charlie Sheen. One of the highest-paid actors on television, he seems to have gone off the deep end in recent weeks with stories of pornstar binges, vitriolic name-calling and the cancellation of his hugely popular CBS show, Two and a Half Men.
Born Carlos Estevez, Charlie actually comes from a Latino acting dynasty. His father, Martin Sheen, has won countless awards for his work in such films as The Departed and the TV series The West Wing. And though Charlie has been lauded for his talents too (he’s got a Golden Globe and an ALMA Award), it’s his off-camera behavior that always seems to get the most attention.
Since the mid-1990s, Sheen has been a regular in the tabloids, with scandals involving prostitutes, a cocaine overdose in 1998, and multiple ugly divorces. But amazingly, none of that compares to what he's been doing this year.
Back in January, just two months after he filed for divorce from wife No. 3, TMZ caught Charlie pulling all-night Vegas binges with a variety of notable pornstars. Soon after, he was hospitalized for mysterious “abdominal pains” and took a voluntary trip to rehab, which forced his popular Two and a Half Men sitcom to halt production.
Though it was expected that Two and a Half Men would resume shooting episodes by mid-February, everything came crashing down after Charlie began badmouthing series creator Chuck Lorre in an online interview.
"I violently hate Chaim Levine (Chuck Lorre),” Sheen told TMZ. “He's a stupid, stupid little man and a p**sy punk that I'd never want to be like. That's me being polite!"
After hearing that, network execs immediately cancelled Men for the rest of the season. That left hundreds of crew members unpaid for the remaining unfilmed episodes, something Charlie didn’t seem too happy about.
“We’re in forced hiatus,” Sheen told ABC News. “They said 'you get ready, we’ll get ready,' and I got ready and no one’s there.”
On Monday, the studio agreed to pay out everyone’s wages for the remainder of the season, but that still leaves plenty of questions about whether Men will ever return to television. With the latest news about death threats to his ex-wife and police visits to the Sheen home, we have a feeling the show may have to go on without Charlie.
Do you think Charlie’s gone past the point of no return? Sound off in the comments or @MTV3.
