Whether it’s J.Lo in the judge’s seat or Chris Medina singing his heart out, Season 10 of American Idol is definitely packing some Latin heat. Colombian-, Mexican- and Cuban-American crooners dominated the auditions, but with big cuts underway, only a few lucky Latinos are packing their bags for next week’s trip to Vegas.
Fan favorite Chris Medina is advancing. Just as his story captured our hearts, so did his talent, especially when he brought out an acoustic guitar for a stellar unplugged version of “My Prerogative” on Thursday's episode.
Los Angeles native Julie Zorrilla showed that her range extended way beyond mere singing chops when she brought out a keyboard for a jazzy Sara Bareilles jam. Though fans have shown mixed reactions, she could hang on and surprise people in the coming weeks.
LuisMi fans have something to be excited about with this year’s lineup. Cuban-American contestant Jovanny Barreto offered up an impressive version of Miguel’s “Contigo en la Distancia” during his audition and is still in the running. Could his shirtless stunt have had something to do with it?
Puerto Rican dancer Tiffany Rios made it all the way to Hollywood, but unfortunately got cut earlier in the week after a lackluster performance. Though her personality was larger than life, she ultimately got a thumbs down from Jennifer, Steven and Randy.
Next week, things will start to get serious, as American Idol whittles the group down to the final 24 in Sin City. Contestants will be expected to belt out Beatles tunes on the “LOVE” stage amid the colors and ambiance of Cirque du Soleil. Let’s hope our favorite Latinos channel some rocking versions of John, Paul, George and Ringo!
