We’ve got to hand it to the GLAAD Media Awards. They really make a point to recognize gay and lesbian role models in all mediums. This year's categories include Outstanding Blog, Outstanding Comic Book and Outstanding Film (to name a few). But even more exciting is the fact that novelas, Spanish talk shows and ex-RBD singer Christian Chavez are getting honored too.
The GLAAD Media Awards were created in 1990 to “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives.” Past honorees include the TV series Ugly Betty, the movie Milk and trailblazer Pedro Zamora.
This year, Burlesque, Easy A, The Girl Who Played with Fire, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The Kids Are All Right are nominated for Outstanding Film, Wide Release. Howl, I Love You Phillip Morris, La Mission, Patrik, Age 1.5 and Undertow are competing for Outstanding Film, Limited Release. On the television front, Brothers & Sisters was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and Modern Family for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Of course, we're also rooting for Christian Chavez in the Outstanding (Spanish-Language) Music Artist category. Since publicly coming out (way before Ricky Martin), the pop star has been active in HIV awareness campaigns and has become a role model for young gay Latinos. But above all, he’s a fantastic singer, and we can’t wait to see him take home that prize.
Who do you think deserves to be honored in the gay community? Sound off in the comments or @MTV3.
