Define the term artist. Is it someone with a paintbrush and an easel? A person who composes and performs music? Maybe a writer who imagines original stories for the screen? Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro says yes, yes and yes, and he's built an original workshop to encourage that kind of creativity.
Del Toro partnered with director Matthew Cullen, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro and producer Javier Jimenez to launch Mirada, a fully equipped, 25,000-square-foot studio for storytellers. The Marina del Ray, Calif., facility — the same studio used to shoot such films as Blade Runner and Close Encounters — will be used to develop and create all kinds of projects. As Guillermo explained to Latino Review,
“We are creating a storytelling engine in the form of a company — an imaginarium, where we are free to explore the practical possibilities of transmedia without compartmentalizing our artistic process. Mirada will be an adaptive entity, constantly in transformation. We see a different model that looks beyond what the market is doing right now to where it will be in ten years.”
We think this sounds pretty fascinating. With the majority of its partners coming from Mexico, we can't wait to see what this crew comes up with. CGI ghosts for the Haunted Mansion movie? New rubber Hulk suits for Guillermo’s upcoming TV series? Perhaps they'll create something entirely new, cooked up by someone just like you. That’s right all of you aspiring artists, polish up those resumes and get in touch with Mirada ASAP!
