Here’s a wild scenario: Instead of Spider-Man battling superhuman bad guys, how about if we pit him against a deadly great white shark? It may be closer to happening than you think now that the Discovery Channel is turning its incredibly popular Shark Week series into a graphic novel.
Since 1987, the Discovery Channel has devoted seven days a year to real stories about hammerheads, megamouths and sharp-toothed Jaws doppelgangers. In 2010, the series reached more than 30 million viewers.
The graphic novel, Top 10 Deadliest Sharks, will be geared toward both kids and adults, featuring true tales of life-and-death encounters with the oceans' deadliest creatures. As Discovery VP Elizabeth Bakacs put it,
“Discovery’s mission has always been to help viewers satisfy curiosity about the world around them through breathtaking imagery and stories. Graphic novels offer a unique opportunity to expand our platforms for storytelling.”
And the network isn't stopping there. Plans are in the works to develop a few more graphic novels — Dinosaurs & Prehistoric Predators, based on its dinosaur specials, and another called World's Most Dangerous Animals. No word yet on whether any of the featured creatures will have capes or X-ray vision.
Top 10 Deadliest Sharks hits comic shops December 1.
