Isn’t it time the Super Bowl halftime show featured an artist who’s actually had a hit within the past 20 years? Since 2004 (when Janet Jackson had that infamous “wardrobe malfunction”), the NFL has stuck with safe aging rockers to fill the slot. But now things may be changing, with sources confirming that the Black Eyed Peas will take the stage in 2011!

Regarded as one of the biggest television events of the year, the Super Bowl regularly attracts over 100 million viewers. In fact, the price of one 30-second commercial can go as high as $3 million (no wonder they’re so well done). With so much riding on the event, it’s obvious that a lot of thought goes into that halftime act.
For the past six years the NFL has shied away from hip-hop performances, hoping to appeal more to middle-America by hiring acts like Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. But with nearly 30 million albums sold worldwide, the power of the Peas cannot be ignored. It’s obvious that the masses have embraced them in a major way.
Always high concept, but never too controversial, Fergie and company could have just the right amount of mainstream appeal to make the gig work (as opposed to someone like Lady Gaga). Plus, they happen to be in the middle of a promotional blitz for their new The Beginning album. That means we’ll get a nice sampling of new music mixed in with some lady lump greatest hits.
And seeing how well the group did during their recent AMA performance, we’ve “Gotta Feeling” that they’ll kick butt at Cowboys Stadium next February.
