The honor, the prestige, the $1.5 million bucks! There are quite a few benefits that go along with nabbing a Nobel Peace Prize and this year the literature honor was bestowed upon Peruvian author, Mario Vargas Llosa.
At 74 years old, Vargas Llosa has published over 30 works and won numerous accolades throughout South America. Some of his more famous books like La Fiesta del Chivo and Pantaleón Y Las Visitadoras have been turned into very successful Spanish-language films.
When speaking to the press after hearing about the honor, Mario seemed rather humbled by the entire experience,
"I am very grateful to the Swedish Academy. It is totally unexpected, a real surprise. I think it is, for any writer, a great encouragement, a recognition of a world."
And if you think this literary legend is slowing down, think again. Vargas Llosa still writes numerous political essays, works as a visiting professor at several prominent universities, and sits on the board of the Real Academia Española, a royal institution responsible for regulating the Spanish language. Now if we could only get him to set up a Twitter account…
