C’mon "Sesame Street", you knew you had to be inviting a little risqué controversy when you invited Katy Perry to appear on your show. Her first hit was about kissing another girl, she was half-naked in the “California Gurls” video, and she’s been known to throw some pretty wild parties. So it’s not all that shocking to hear that the family-friendly program is axing a segment she filmed with Elmo.
What’s the “official” reason? According to execs on the show, it was because Katy’s yellow dress was just a little too revealing for the pre-Kindergarten crowd. The clip itself is actually pretty cute and featured Perry singing “Hot N Cold” with Elmo through the animated streets of New York.
But according to executive producer Carol-Lynn Parente, the comments on the final product (which viewers got a sneak preview of on the web) were starting to sound like they came from Oscar the Grouch. “We would never produce anything we thought was inappropriate. We were surprised not only by the amount of [negative] feedback, but how fast it came in. It was a lot."
Even though their big duet never made it on the air, Katy Tweeted that there were certainly no hard feeling between her and her favorite muppet.
"Wow, looks like my play date with Elmo has been cut short!"
And Elmo himself appeared on “Good Morning America” with some opinions on the matter. "We'll have another one! Elmo loves miss Katy." Don’t fret “Sesame Street” fans, there will still be plenty of other celebs appearing this season, including Jason Bateman, Jude Law, and Jennifer Garner.
