By Sharmaine Jones
The World Cup has taken over! Giving us amazing opening performances by Juanes, Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas, the first exciting Mexico match, and more, MTV Tr3s has been following the action.
What started off strong could use a serious energy boost — 7 days into the 2010 FIFA World Cup, we're hoping to see more goals scored, all-out attacking play and individual skill. Halfway through the second round — with 20 matches played and an unimpressive 38 goals scored — this could turn out to be one of the least scoring World Cups of all time. In the 2006 World Cup, 20 matches resulted in 44 goals scored. Let's kick it up a notch, people!
Group A
Leading this group is Uruguay and Mexico. They have pretty much sewn up spots in the next round. With the final game against each other scheduled for Tuesday, (June 22) they would simply have to tie to advance. Unfortunately, France and South Africa don't really have a chance.
Group B
Argentina is in! They won their first game against Nigeria 1-0. That, coupled with Gonzalo Higuain going on a scoring spree firing a hat trick (3 goals) to lead Argentina in a win over Korea Republic, virtually assures them a place in the Round of 16. Higuain leads all players with with 3 goals scored.

Korea Republic and Greece are fighting for the second spot with relatively even statistics. With Korea facing a dismal Nigeria, and Greece's final game against the the strong Argentina next Tuesday (June 22), it's a safe assumption that Korea will occupy the 2nd spot.
Group C
Slovenia holds the top spot, but with the United States rallying back from 2 goals down to tie the game against them today (June 18), the final standings in this group are difficult to predict. England is scheduled to play last place Algeria tonight and a win would move them into the second spot.

Group D
Germany and Serbia are the only teams in this group to have played two games so far. Both teams won one and lost one. Germany destroyed Australia 4-0 in their win but lost to Serbia. Ghana is undefeated with their one win coming against Serbia. There are still 3 more matches to play between the four teams so this one is up in the air. The next match is tomorrow (June 19), between Ghana and Australia.
Group E
This is another group with a lot of playing to go. Netherlands defeated Denmark 2-0 and Japan defeated Cameroon 1-0. The standings will become interesting when Netherlands and Japan face off against each other tomorrow (June 19).
Group F
Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, and Slovakia have all tied in their games against each other. In the next match (June 20), Slovakia will play Paraguay, while Italy plays New Zealand.
Group G
The favored Brazil — as everyone assumed — is leading the pack. Once again, with only one match played, Brazil was the only team to actually win their game against Korea DPR 2-1, with Cote d'Ivoire tieing Portugal 0-0. The next match will be held on June 20, with Brazil facing Cote d'Ivoire.
Group H
European champions Spain were humbled by Switzerland in the first upset of the World Cup. Victims of the “Low Score World Cup Blues,” Spain could not score a goal. Up until this point, Spain won 12 games in a row, and had lost just one encounter in 50 games, but the Swizz came to spoil their party.

Gelson Fernandez sent the Spanish team packing after running through their defense and shooting in a loose ball, scrambling in front of the net. Spain would ultimately need to win their next two games to move assure a spot in the Round of 16. If there is a team that could pull off the feat, it's Spain!
Chile beat Honduras 1-0 securing the 2nd spot for now. Chile's next match is against is against Switzerland (June 21), and after coming off of the victory against Spain, the Swiss will be full of confidence and a tough group to beat.
Honduras has a daunting task Monday (June 21), facing off against Spain after a loss. Sorry, Honduras — our prayers go out to you guys.
Remember — we've sent Carlos Santos and a trusty production crew to South Africa to get up close and personal with the fans during the 2010 FIFA World Cup! He'll be announcing La Super Copa Tr3s matches and winners, starting June 21 with Shakira vs. Beyoncé! Be sure to vote on MTVTr3s.com!
