Yesterday's devastating 7.0 terremoto en Haiti left the city of Port-Au-Prince in a horrifying state of destruction. El país, which shares la isla con la República Dominicana, hasn't experienced an earthquake of this magnitude in 200 years. Millones de personas have been left without homes or food, and thousands more have lost loved ones in the destruction.
Wyclef Jean, one of Haiti's most famous exports, has asked todo el mundo to help his Haitian brothers and sisters in any way possible. El artista stated the following on his website:
"I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now. President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands 'ready to assist' the Haitian people. The U.S. military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible."
For an already impoverished nation like Haiti to be hit this hard, we can only imagine the amount of time and money it will take to recover. Quieres ayudar?
The American Red Cross has a full-time staff on the ground in Haiti, providing ongoing HIV/AIDS prevention and disaster preparedness programs, and has already pledged an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by the earthquake. They seek additional donations to continue providing food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.
Also, Wyclef's own organization, Yele Haiti will also be accepting donations to help people affected by the disaster. Visit the website or text YELE to 501 501 to donate $5 to the relief fund.
