With the disturbing allegations of abuse regarding the former R&B dream team couple this week...
We're reminded how anyone can fall victim to an abusive relationship. The alleged confrontation between Chris Breezy and RiRi came coincidentally a few days after National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week, a three-week-old effort to get warning signs about violence out to young people (16-24) in relationships.
We learned from the Texas Council on Family Violence that 75 percent of Texans age 16-24 who were surveyed during the awareness week reported experiencing dating violence or knew someone who had. Being that Texas has a huge Latino population, this continues to be a major concern for our comunidad.
Most people don't realize when they are actually IN an abusive relationship. When does cute jealousy and pasión turn dangerous? Leave those for las telenovelas. We recently gave you tips for a HEALTHY relationship; now we're giving out signs of a rocky one. We partnered with Urban Strategies otra vez to get a check list of red flags.
How can you tell if the person of your sueños has turned into a complete nightmare? Answer the questions below:
Does your partner ever:
- Embarrass you with bad names and put downs?
- Look at you or act in ways that scare you?
- Control what you do, who you see or talk to, or where you go?
- Stop or prevent you from seeing or talking to friends and family?
- Take your money, make you ask for money, or refuse to give you money?
- Make all the decisions?
- Act like the abuse is no big deal, tells you it’s your fault, or deny it happened?
- Threaten to hurt or kill your pets?
- Intimidate you with guns, knives, or other weapons?
- Shove you, slap you, or hit you?
- Force you to drop criminal charges?
- Threaten to commit suicide if you leave?
- Threaten to kill you?
If you answered yes to even one of the questions above, you may be in abusive and unhealthy relationship. Domestic violence occurs when a family member, partner or even ex-partner tries to physically or psychologically hurt you. It can happen to anyone and can manifest itself as physical violence, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, financial abuse and threats of violence.
If you fear you are in an unhealthy relationship please speak up! Call the free national domestic violence hotline for options and support at 800-799-7233 or 800-787-3224 (TTY). Also, for resources in your local area check out the Office for Victims of Crime website.
