"La Charanga" isn't the only tune Crooked Stilo has been singing to. These fellas have been praising their roots and the Salvadorian anthem since they came on the scene in the 90s. Fast-forwarding to a new millennium filled with undeniable success and endless possibilities; these brothers are as humble and firmly rooted in their culture as they were when they first hit the scene! In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, we got a chance to chat exclusively with the duo about how they represent for nuestra gente and how they keep la cultura alive. Read the entire interview right below the hood!
You guys are very active in your community. What other celebrities do you admire for doing the same thing?
There are a lot of celebrities that are doing their thing. Rosario Dawson is very involved in politics and speaking out for Latinos. Many stars also represent social change through their music, it doesn't always have to be speaking out in a campaign. Rubén Blades is also very active in his community efforts. We think all celebrities should throw in su granito de arena to show that we can do great things.
What community efforts para los Latinos is Crooked Stilo working on right now?
We believe you always have to give back to the community. We are about helping out kids first and foremost. We are currently working with a non-profit organization that sends aid to El Salvador. We send out school supplies and clothes because these kids don't have the things we have out here. On September 26th we are hosting an event out here in Cali to help collect more goods to send to El Salvador. It's a start and it's a good thing.
How often do you guys get to visit El Salvador?
We just went in January, and before that it was maybe a five year gap since we went back. Sometimes you get so caught up in your career and you know in New York City and Los Angeles everything goes by super fast, but we plan on visiting again in November and doing a couple of presentations. The last time we were there we did a teletone to help underprivileged kids in El Salvador. We plan on working that out again in November.
What offers you the most pride about your cultura?
We come from a small country with little resources, and to be able to work hard and see the success in it all (for the little we have accomplished) that is a great thing. Putting El Salvador in the map and showing that our country producing good people - with good hearts and great talents. Knowing that our people are hard working people trying to succeed...that gives us pride.
We are shining with orgullo just to hear them speak! Be sure to check out Crooked Stilo's events and more at MySpace.com. Keep it locked because there is always more Crooked Stilo to look forward to right here on Blogamole!
